Tension gripped Bishnupur Chhak on National Highway-16 under Dhamnagar Police limits in Bhadrak district after a bike rider and a pillion rider were killed in a head-on collision with a truck on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Dipti Ranjan, a resident of Talapada village under Dhamnagar police limits, and Prashant Swain of Rangarajpur village under Bhadrak rural police limits.

As per reports, owing to construction work, while one side of the NH was closed, one side was open for vehicular movement. Dipti and Prashant were going towards Bhadrak. As they were nearing Bishnupur Chhak, a scrap-laden truck hit them, leading to their death on the spot.

As the news spread, local residents came onto the road, and staged a roadblock, protesting against the authorities turning the portion of the NH as one-way. Hundreds of vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the road.

“I am a local resident. We have witnessed 10 to 11 fatal accidents due to the closure of the road in this particular portion of the NH. When the bridge construction work has jumped its deadline, the Collector and the SP, who are using this road on a daily basis, are silent on this,” said Soumya Ranjan Mohapatra, a local resident.

On being informed, a team from Dhamnagar Police Station reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitating people.
