At least three people were killed while over 13 sustained multiple injuries in separate road mishaps in Odisha on Sunday. With the number of accident deaths rising, road mishaps have become a matter of serious concern in the state.
In the first incident, a fish vendor, on his way to sell fish on the occasion of ‘Chhadakhai’, was crushed to death by a speeding truck in Paradip’s Atharbanki. The deceased has been identified as Mahendra Jena.
Riding a cycle, Jena was on his way to sell fish when the truck ran over him. The incident spread outrage in the area as angry locals resorted to road blockade demanding the restriction on the entry of heavy vehicles and adequate compensation for the kin of the deceased.
Likewise, a youth in Balasore died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle at Indira Square in Basta. The deceased Kanhu Pradhan was returning home from work when an unidentified vehicle hit him on NH-16 and sped away.
On being informed, police seized the body and launched a manhunt to nab the absconding vehicle.
In the third incident, a female tourist was killed while over 13 others sustained grievous injuries after a vehicle they were travelling in overturned at Kendughati under Mohana police limits in Gajapati district. The incident occurred when the tourists from Bhubaneswar were on their way to Koraput’s Gupteswar.
The deceased has been identified as Sarojini Behera. The injured were rescued and admitted to Mohana Community Health Centre (CHC). Two of the injured were subsequently shifted to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital after their condition deteriorated.
At least 15 tourists including the driver were inside the vehicle when the accident occurred. The injured tourists attributed rash driving by the driver to be the reason for the accident.
