New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Taking into cognizance the recent issues faced by the Indian Railways where the highly qualified recruits for the job of a track maintainer refused to work, the Railway Ministry has conceded that it has revised the minimum qualification required to apply for the job.
The minimum education qualification for the track maintainer position was Class VIII, but it was later increased to Class 10th and again possession of an Industrial Training Institute certification by the candidates was sought.
As per reports, MBAs, BE engineers and other highly qualified students are joining as trackmen but they do not want to walk the tracks and carry on other related works causing problems for the railways, said an official.

Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha said yesterday that the railways was getting over qualified personnel.
"Some of the track maintainers recruited in the recent past on Indian Railways possess higher qualification than the minimum prescribed for the post. Some of these highly qualified track maintainers show reluctance to perform manual works required to be carried out by them.
"However, the ministry of railways has revised the minimum qualification required for recruitment as track maintainer to deal with the matter," PTI quoted the MoS as saying.

Meanwhile, rumors are also there that the ministry is mulling to revise the minimum qualification for various other posts.
