  • An approximate voter turnout of 57.47 per cent was reported as of 7.45 pm from 49 Parliamentary Constituencies that went into the polling in the fifth phase of General Elections 2024 on Monday. 

    Polling across all constituencies was smooth and peaceful. West Bengal reported the highest voter turnout at 73.00 per cent, followed by Ladakh (67.15 per cent), Jharkhand (63.00 per cent), Odisha (60.72 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (57.79 per cent), Jammu and Kashmir (54.49 per cent), Bihar (52.60 per cent) and Maharashtra (48.88 per cent).

    With this, polling has been completed in 25 states and 428 parliamentary constituencies. In Odisha, voting in 63 Assembly constituencies has also been completed.

  • The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections for 49 parliamentary constituencies saw a cumulative voter turnout of 56.68 per cent till 5 pm, as per the data shared by the Election Commission. 

    According to the poll body, West Bengal recorded the highest  voter  turnout (73 per cent), followed by Ladakh (67.15 percent), Jharkhand (61.90 per cent), Odisha (60.55 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (55.80 per cent), Jammu and Kashmir (54.21 per cent), Bihar (52.35 per cent) and Maharashtra (48.66 per cent).

    According to the poll body, Ladakh recorded the highest voter turnout (61.26 per cent), followed by West Bengal (62.72 per cent), Jharkhand (53.90 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (47.55 per cent), Odisha (48.95 per cent), Jammu and Kashmir (44.90 per cent), Bihar (45.33 per cent) and Maharashtra (38.77 per cent).

  • The migrant Kashmiri Pandits turned out in large numbers to vote in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency despite the heat wave, expressing strong support for the creation of dedicated townships for their return and rehabilitation, as well as the restoration of temples in the valley.

    Over 21.30 per cent of the 17.37 lakh electorate cast their votes within the first four hours of polling. Many voters emphasised their enduring connection to Kashmir and their desire to return.

  • A voter turnout of 47.55 per cent was recorded till 3 pm in Uttar Pradesh where polling is underway for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections in 14 constituencies.
    Voting is also taking place for the Lucknow East assembly bypoll. The polling began at 7 am and will go on till 6 pm.
    According to the Election Commission, Amethi recorded a voter turnout of 45.13 per cent till 3 pm, Banda 48.08 per cent, Barabanki 55.35 per cent, Faizabad 48.66 per cent, Fatehpur 47.25 per cent, Gonda 43.23 per cent, Hamirpur 48.87 per cent, Jalaun 46.22 per cent, Jhansi 52.53 per cent, Kaisarganj 46.01 per cent, Kaushambi 43.01 per cent, Lucknow 41.90 per cent, Mohanlalganj 51.08 per cent and Rae Bareli 47.83 per cent.

Voter turnout picks up pace in Bengal amid reports of sporadic violence

  • Polling in the seven Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal picked up pace in the second half of Monday despite reports of scattered poll-related tension coming from certain parts of the state.

    As per the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the state recorded a voter turnout of 62.72 per cent till 3 p.m., which was much higher than the national average of 47.53 per cent (provisional figures).

    Arambagh reported  maximum polling at 67.12 per cent, followed by Uluberia (66.45 per cent), Hooghly (65.01 per cent), Serampore (63.05 per cent), Bangaon (61.83 per cent), Howrah (58.81 per cent), and Barrackpore (55.34 per cent).

  • Sanjay Dutt, Kajol, newly-weds Jackky Bhagnani and Rakul Preet Singh exercised their franchises in Mumbai on a sweltering Monday in the ongoing fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

    In a green and white shirt paired with sunglasses, Sanjay flaunted his inked index finger at the paparazzi present near the polling booth.

    Kajol took to Instagram, where she shared a picture of herself from the car. In the image, she's seen wearing a white outfit and bright red lips as she told the world that she has cast her vote.

    Filmmaker Jackky Bhagnani and his actress wife Rakul came together to cast their vote. Jackky wore a blue T-shirt paired with sunglasses; Rakul chose white to beat the Mumbai heat. The two posed for the assembled shutterbugs after completing the formalities.

    A beaming Neha Dhupia also shared a selfie, flaunting the ink, from her car.

As per the poll authorities, the polling started at 7 am in Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran and Hajipur Lok Sabha constituencies and will continue till 6 pm. Over 95 lakh voters will decide the fate of 80 candidates at 9,436 polling stations.

    A woman lodged the molestation complaint at Uluberia Police Station on Sunday evening, he said.

    “We have removed him from election duty. We are waiting for the police report. If found guilty, necessary action will be taken as per law,” the poll panel official told PTI.

  • Polling has commenced for the fifth phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh, with 14 Lok Sabha constituencies casting their votes on Monday.

    The constituencies participating in this phase include Mohanlalganj (SC), Lucknow, Raebareli, Amethi, Jalaun (SC), Jhansi, Hamirpur, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambi (SC), Barabanki (SC), Faizabad, Kaiserganj, and Gonda.

    In the 2019 elections, the BJP secured victories in 13 of these constituencies, with Raebareli being the sole exception.

    A total of 144 candidates are contesting in these 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

    Prominent political figures whose outcomes will be determined in this phase include Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, contesting from Lucknow, Union Minister Smriti Irani, seeking re-election from Amethi, and Rahul Gandhi, running from Raebareli.

  •  Voters in 49 Lok Sabha seats in eight states/UTs, spanning Ladakh to Odisha, and UP's Awadh and Bundelkhand to bustling Mumbai and its surroundings, began heading to polling stations on Monday to exercise their franchise in the fifth phase.

    Union Ministers Rajnath Singh (Lucknow), Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North), and Smriti Irani (Amethi), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi (Raebareli) and National Conference's Omar Abdullah (Baramulla) are among the 695 candidates in the fray.

    The seats in the fifth phase include five each in Bihar and Odisha, three in Jharkhand, 13 in Maharashtra, 14 in UP, seven in West Bengal, and one each in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Voting for 35 seats of the Odisha Assembly will also be held in the state's second phase of simultaneous polling.

    According to the Election Commission, around 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed to facilitate balloting by 8.95 crore voters - 4.69 crore males, 4.26 crore females and 5,409 third-gender - across 94,732 polling stations.
