Incessant rain for the last couple of days under the influence of a low pressure area has caused landslides and waterlogging in several parts of Odisha. The widespread downpours have triggered flood-like situation in the state. Special Relief Commission (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu said there is apprehension of a medium-scale flood in the Mahanadi river system. He said as many as 481 villages in 12 districts have been affected by incessant rain. District Collectors have been asked to submit damage assessment reports after rain subsides.
Hirakud dam authorities, on Saturday, opened eight more sluice gates of the reservoir as water level of the dam continues to increase following rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
At present, the excess floodwater is being released through 20 gates of Hirakud dam.

The overall flood situation in Bhadrak district is registering a gradual improvement with Baitarini river now flowing below the danger mark. As per the district administration officials, around 1, 81,000 people from 312 villages in four blocks of the district have been affected in the season's first flood this year.

The flood situation in Baitarani and Mahanadi is under control, informed Engineer-in-cof the State Water Resources Department, Bhakta Ranjan Mohanty. There are reports of breaches at two places, however, the water level of all rivers receding as there has been no rainfall, added Mohanty.
He further said that the peak flood will pass through low-lying areas of Kendrapara district this afternoon.
