Aamir Khan may today be seen as a symbol of excellence and consistency in Hindi cinema, but behind the stardom lies a chapter of self-doubt, missteps, and emotional turmoil. The superstar recently opened up about the difficult period that nearly derailed his career before his rise to iconic status.
Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, the actor candidly recalled the period when he feared his career was 'going down the drain.'
‘I Am Not Built to Do 2–3 Films Together’
In conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor – Entertainment and Lifestyle, Hindustan Times, Aamir shared that QSQT made him an overnight star, but the acclaim did not translate into offers from the directors he hoped to work with. Feeling pressured to establish himself, he signed 8–9 films in quick succession, thinking this was modest compared to peers doing 30–40 films.
However, once shooting began, he realised his mistake. “I am not built to do 2–3 films together,” he said, adding that his creative sensibilities did not align with the teams he was working with.

‘One Film Wonder’ Tag and Emotional Turmoil
When the films released and flopped one after another, Aamir was labelled a “one-film wonder” a tag he admits was justified. Worse, he still had unreleased films that he felt were equally poor. “I used to come home and cry. I felt my career was over,” he said.
Reinventing Himself and Rising Again
Determined never to compromise again, Aamir rebuilt his journey with hits like Dil, Raja Hindustani, Sarfarosh, and later, all-time blockbusters such as Ghajini, 3 Idiots, PK, and Dangal. His recent release, Sitaare Zameen Par, crossed Rs 200 crore worldwide before premiering on YouTube.
Aamir’s reflections highlight a powerful truth: even the most celebrated actors face moments of doubt. His commitment to quality storytelling turned early setbacks into one of Bollywood’s most inspiring comebacks.
