Cinephiles were eagerly waiting to see Ranbir Kapoor and Rajkumar Hirani join forces once again following the roaring success of Sanju. Their next collaboration, reportedly centered on the life of an athlete, was said to be one of the most anticipated projects in the making. However, the wait just got longer.

Ranbir-Hirani Reunion Takes a Backseat!
Fresh reports suggest that the film with Ranbir Kapoor has been pushed, as Hirani has decided to shift gears toward another passion project- a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, with Aamir Khan playing the lead.
As reported by Mid-Day, a source revealed the portal, “Hirani and Ranbir were very excited about this one; they had been jamming on it through the year. Hirani decided to park it. Ranbir’s calendar is packed, so it made sense to regroup later. Everyone wants it to be like Sanju, so they’re okay to wait.”
Aamir Khan Steps Into the Shoes of a Cinema Legend
With the Ranbir project put on hold, Rajkumar Hirani is now dedicating his full attention to the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic, which is expected to go on floors in January 2026. The film will see Aamir Khan stepping into the shoes of the man who laid the foundation for Indian filmmaking.
Sources close to the project revealed that Aamir has already begun his transformation. “He’s growing out his look and will dive straight into workshops in December. This is the first time he’s playing a real-life pioneer of cinema, and Hirani wants to give it the grandeur it deserves,” the insider shared.
Given Hirani’s storytelling finesse and Aamir’s dedication to authenticity, this collaboration is already generating major buzz in the industry.
What Delayed the Reunion?
Apart from Hirani’s new commitment, Ranbir Kapoor’s overflowing schedule has also contributed to the delay. The actor is currently gearing up for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, followed by Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana.

The Mid-Day report further mentioned, “Post that, depending on which script is ready, he will take a call between Dhoom 4 and Animal Park, as they are both in advanced development.”
