More than two decades after Nayak: The Real Hero left a lasting impression on audiences, the iconic political drama is officially set to return. Reports of Anil Kapoor acquiring the rights to the 2001 film have now been confirmed, with co-producer Deepak Mukut revealing that Nayak 2 is in development and will be jointly produced by him and Kapoor.
Directed by Shankar, Nayak told the story of television journalist Shivaji Rao, who challenges the Chief Minister of Maharashtra during a live debate and is unexpectedly asked to run the state for a day. Anil Kapoor’s portrayal of the righteous civilian-turned-Chief Minister struck a chord with audiences, offering a powerful vision of governance rooted in integrity and decisive leadership.
Sequel Officially Confirmed
Originally produced by AS Rathnam, the rights to Nayak were later held by Deepak Mukut.
According to Hindustan Times, Mukut confirmed the sequel, saying, “He and I are making the film together. It is too early to say anything about it since several discussions are going on.” He further added, “Yes, the sequel is in works and we are producing the film together.”

Anil Kapoor to Face the Camera
While details about the production schedule and casting remain under wraps, Mukut made one thing clear Anil Kapoor will reprise his role. “Of course he will!” he said, putting speculation to rest.

A Bollywood Hungama report quoted a source close to the project saying Kapoor is deeply aware of the film’s enduring popularity. He believes the subject of Nayak has strong relevance and immense potential for a second part.
