Woman hangs self, family members allege dowry torture

Kendrapara: A newly married woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in  Andara village under Pattamundai block of Kendrapara district late on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased Namita Mallick lodged an FIR against six persons, including her husband and in-laws and two other villagers at the Pattamundai police station alleging that she was regularly being tortured over dowry that forced her take the extreme step.

According to sources, Namita was a teacher and working in a school since the last six years. She got married to one Debasish Mallick two years back. However, situation turned ugly when her in-laws started demanding more dowry and tortured her.

Unable to bear the harassment, Namita ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room yesterday night. Police rushed to the spot after getting information and sent her body for post-mortem, sources added.
