Bhubaneswar: Elaborate arrangements have been made at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar and the hospital is all prepared to tackle any situation in the wake of coronavirus pandemic, said AIIMS Director, B. Gitanjali here on Friday.
Informing about the measures to fight the COVID-19 situation in the State, the AIIMS director said that the hospital is ready with a separate infrastructure at its Ayush building with isolation wards for treating COVID-19 patients.
“In the Ayush building, which is a separate block from the main hospital, 20 isolated beds have been arranged along with 10 ventilators on standby. In addition, we have 36 private cabins ready for the COVID-19 patients,” said Gitanjali.

“As many as 150 beds in one entire block (J Block) have also been kept for the COVID-19 patients. Summing up, we have 206 beds with 20 ventilators ready to tackle any emergency situation in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic,” she said.
The hospital has also reportedly ordered 40 ventilators which will be reaching AIIMS within a month.
“We have sufficient consumables, personal protective equipment, testing kits and everything that is necessary at this point of time. The hospital has prepared the Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for each staff who will be coming in contact with the coronavirus-infected patients and to handle the flow of patients into the hospital,” stated Gitanjali.
As per reports, the doctors, nurses, para-medical staff, security guards and cleaning staff of the hospital have also been imparted special training to deal with the situation.
“We have closed the OPDs and only the patients, who are seriously ill and are in dire need of medical help are being allowed to the OPDs. The casualty ward is operating 24X7. The hospital has stopped conducting elective surgeries and only performing life-saving and emergency surgeries,” added the Bhubaneswar AIIMS Director.
The hospital has also opened a COVID-19 screening OPD inside the Ayush building in which patients having respiratory symptoms will be examined and if necessary, coronavirus testing will also be done, added reports.

“Extensive counselling and motivation programmes are being undertaken to educate the hospital staff more on coronavirus situation and to boost their spirit so that they can skilfully handle the situation,” Gitanjali added.
On the other hand, SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack will be the nodal centre for treatment and management of COVID19 cases in the State. A provision for nearly 2,000 beds are being made at SCB and other hospitals managed by Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).
At present, SCB Hospital has reserved 500 beds reserved for Coronavirus patients and the district administration is also planning to upgrade the capacity to 700 beds soon.
Earlier On Thursday, an agreement was signed between Odisha government, corporates and two medical colleges of Bhubaneswar to set up 1000-bedded COVID 19 facilities.
Moreover, the two new facilities at SUM and KIMS medical colleges in Bhubaneswar, which are expected to be operational in a fortnight, will help preventing transmission of the disease to others.
As per their agreement with the Odisha government, SUM Hospital will set up a 500-bedded exclusive Covid-19 facility with 20 ICUs while KIMS Medical College is expected to set up a 450-bedded hospital.
