At least five persons were killed and more than 10 others critically injured in a tragic road accident on National Highway 520 near K Balang Police Station in Sundargarh district on Thursday.
The accident involved a bus and a truck and has sent shockwaves through the local community.
According to sources, the ill-fated Lingaraj bus, which was on its way from Rourkela to Koida, was forced to divert from its usual route due to heavy traffic congestion.
While navigating the alternate route, the bus was reportedly hit head-on by a speeding truck, resulting in the deaths of five passengers at the spot.
Over a dozen others sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed; authorities have cautioned that the death toll may rise further as rescue operations continue.
Several passengers were reportedly trapped inside the bus following the collision.
The critically injured were immediately rushed to the K Balang Community Health Centre for treatment.

On receiving news of the accident, local police and fire services personnel reached the site promptly and launched an extensive rescue operation, said sources.
