Bhubaneswar:  With a few days of rain revealing the drainage rot in the not-so-smart state capital, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation on Wednesday pulled up its socks to address the issue.

The Corporation, shot off a show-cause notice to the Nayapalli-based Hotel Presidency  seeking explanation for illegal encroachment on land earmarked as 'Right of Way' near the NH -5 which has allegedly led to waterlogging issues on the NH and adjoining ISKON temple.

The letter by the BMC stated that the hotel is "misutilising the encroached land for parking of vehicles, discharging dirty water, causing insanitary condition in the area and for installing a generator on the government land adjoining the hotel. "

The hotel authorities were questioned "why suitable action should not be initiated against the hotel under relevant provisions of the OMC Act, 2003 read with BMC Users Charges Resolution, 2015".

An explanation has been sought within 7 days failing which the BMC authorities will take appropriate action.

It may be noted that severe waterlogging problem gripped the NH-16 near the ISKON temple after recent spells of torrential rain sparking off criticisms from several quarters.

Meanwhile, authorities of the Iskcon temple have also been issued a similar notice by the BMC asking them to explain the "unauthorized and illegal" encroachment made by them on the road and inside premises to build shop outlets. These have prevented the proper drainage of rain water causing insanitary condition in the area, read the notice.
