Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police Wednesday raided a Spa under Kharabela Nagar police limits of Bhubaneswar and arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in a sex racket.

Besides, three women engaged in the flesh trade were also rescued by police from the Spa.

Acting on a tip-off, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of Commissionerate Police and Kharabela Nagar police jointly conducted a surprise raid last night and busted the racket.

As per police, one Bijay Thakur of Sundarapada area and his associate Raja Barik were the owners of the Spa and responsible for running sex racket in the guise of Spa.

During the raid, police also seized Rs 3,500 hard cash, mobile phones and a few other objectionable items from the Spa.

“Flesh trade was running in the guise of a Spa. Further investigation into the matter is on,” said a police official.

This is not the first instance that Commissionerate police has unearthed a sex racket operating from beauty parlours and similar units at Chandrasekharpur and Kharabela Nagar.

Earlier, the police had busted a major prostitution racket that engaged women of foreign nationality after an ‘undercover’ operation. Three women from Thailand were detained for operating a sex racket in a clandestine manner from a Spa centre in Bhubaneswar.

In November last year, the Commissionerate Police had raided another massage parlour in Nayapalli area and arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in a sex racket. Four women were also rescued by police from the parlour.
