The Odisha government on Saturday announced that the National Education Policy 2020 will be implemented in government Universities and affiliated colleges across the state from the current academic session (2024-25).
A press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office informed this.
As per the release, the implementation of the NEP 2020 is aimed at bringing a sea change in the education system in the state. According to the New Education Policy 2020, a four-year undergraduate course is set to begin in the state, where eligible students will receive a certificate, diploma, degree, and degree with honours at the end of each year. On the basis of the credit framework provided by the UGC, a state-level credit framework has been prepared, wherein opportunities for credits for skill development and internships have been provided.
Similarly, credits will also be awarded for community service, extracurricular activities, NCC, NSS, etc. This allows students to choose their subjects freely and re-enter or exit higher education institutions multiple times, completing their degree course within seven years.

As per the NEP 2020, steps are being taken to make the state’s higher education system more qualitative, autonomous, and inclusive. The focus is on enhancing research and innovation through various schemes, promoting practical-based education, and improving skills through internships with industry. The curriculum will be made more job-oriented and to meet industry needs.
Presently, a detailed model syllabus has been approved for 40 core undergraduate subjects, including two skill enhancement courses, 112 multidisciplinary courses, 14 vocational courses, 56 value-added courses and 84 skill enhancement courses.
With the implementation of the NEP 2020, universities under the State Government’s Higher Education Department will be able to implement the National Education Policy following the new syllabus and credit framework.
