Following open rifts, disputes, allegations, and public statements, the controversy surrounding the affairs of traditional Odia theatre shows or jatras has yet to die down. In the latest of such cases, members, staff, and artists of the Parbati Gananatya troupe have reportedly been stranded without pay and any resolution in sight.

Sources reported that several performers of the group were stuck in Uttarasasan in the Biridi block of Jagatsinghpur district as they have not been paid their wages. In contrast, reports also mentioned that despite non-payment, the performances have continued there for three days.

No Pay Despite Performance:

According to reports, the Parbati Gananatya troupe was contracted to perform in Uttarasasan from April 14 to 16. However, the show on April 14 had to be cancelled because the artists failed to arrive on time.

Although performances resumed for three days following it, the troupe has since been stranded due to unpaid wages, as artists and even vehicle owners have refused to move, citing non-payment of wages.

“It has been two months and we have not been paid. The owners keep delaying our dues with false assurances,” said a member of the Parbati Gananatya troupe. Similarly, another member added that while they performed from April 15 to 17, they have been stuck there ever since.

“We want the jatra to continue, but the owners must come down here and pay us,” she added.

Threats To Stop Performances:

Meanwhile, staff and artists of the group have warned that if their demands are not met, they will suspend performances and not return to the stage.

Accordingly, the director of Parbati Gananatya stated that the issue has been brought to their attention, and they will discuss it with the owner to find a resolution.
