Islamabad: About 100 Taliban fighters attacked a police check post in Peshawar city in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, killing two policemen and injuring five more, officials said.

A group of militants initially targeted the check post in Sarband, a suburb of Peshawar, at around midnight.

Police repelled that attack but a larger group of Taliban fighters, armed with automatic weapons and rocket launchers, launched a second assault before dawn.

Two policemen were killed and five injured in the gun battle that last over three hours.

Some reports said about 15 militants were killed but the Taliban took away their bodies.

The attack occurred in an area near Khyber Agency, which is part of the lawless tribal belt that is described by the US as haven for al Qaeda and Taliban elements.
