Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday consoled the players of the defeated Sri Lankan cricket team, saying he was still proud that they took the country to the World Cup finals.

"We can be proud of the team and Sri Lanka will stand by them to move forward," Rajapaksa said in a message to the team which returned home from Mumbai today after receiving defeat at the hands of India in the final match.

President Rajapaksa, who also travelled to Mumbai for the finals, had returned home last night itself. The team returned this morning.

An official at the president`s office said he will meet with the national team "soon" to pay tribute to them for taking the country to the final.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in the final of the World Cup match at Mumbai last night.
