The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Meherpalli area near Kesura in Bhubaneswar.

According to sources, the plant will be built at an estimated cost of RS 175 crore and will produce 10 tonne of compressed biogas daily by processing 200 tonnes waste.

While the Oil India Limited will implement the project, the Odisha government has provided 8 acres of land for its construction, sources informed, adding that the project aims at processing organic and household waste to produce CNG gas. 

According to Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushnachandra Mohapatra, the construction of this project will be completed within two years.

“We all are trying to make Bhubaneswar a greater Bhubaneswar. Oil India and BMC have entered into an agreement for the smooth management of the waste materials. The plant will process 200 tonne waste daily to produce biogas,” Mohapatra said.

Ranjit Kumar Rath, the Managing Director of Oil India Limited, shared that the company aims to set up similar biogas plants in 25 cities across the country.

“We have a plan to establish 25 compress biogas plants in the country including six to seven in Odisha. We have signed a MoU with the BMC to set up a plant in Bhubaneswar. Primarily, Rs 175 crore will be invested to set up the plant. It will process 200 tonne of waste daily to produce 10 tonne compressed biogas. For the maintenance of the plant, additional Rs 20 crore will be needed,” Rath said.
