A youth remains stranded on an islet in the middle of the Subarnarekha River in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district after the river swelled due to heavy rainfall upstream in Jharkhand.
According to sources, the incident occurred near Merumatha village under Saraskana block in the district, where a rising water level has cut off access to the mainland.
The youth had been staying on the islet for cattle grazing and fishing. As the river level rose suddenly, he got stranded. Strong currents and intense hot conditions have created hurdles in the ongoing rescue efforts, sources added.
Fire service teams from Saraskana and Bangriposhi have reached the spot and are making continuous efforts to rescue him safely. Till the last report came in, rescue operations were going on.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Sundargarh district, another youth who had been stranded under an under-construction bridge over the Ib River near Kudabaga was successfully rescued.
The youth had reportedly fallen asleep on the riverbed and was found encircled by water after the river rose sharply overnight.
Fire services responded promptly and managed to bring the individual to safety without any injuries.
Authorities have advised residents, especially those living near rivers and low-lying areas, to exercise caution during the monsoon season, as water levels may rise unexpectedly due to upstream rainfall.
