Washington: The US has said that there was a need for significant political, social and economic reform in the countries across the Middle East as people across the region, emboldened by the success in Tunisia and Egypt, were demanding more from their governments.

"Clearly, the people in the region, emboldened by what`s happened in Tunisia and Egypt and well connected through social media, are gathering together, standing up, and demanding more of their governments," State Department spokesman P J Crowley told reporters yesterday at his daily news briefing.

Crowley said the US is watching developments in other countries, including Yemen, Algeria and Bahrain.

"Our advice is the same," he said adding that there`s a significant need for political, social, and economic reform across the region.
