Following the mysterious death of a newly-wed woman, the husband of the victim, who was detained, allegedly escaped from the Medical Police Outpost in Berhampur on Tuesday.
As per reports, Lakshmi Maharana of ODRP Colony under Golanthara Police limits in Berhampur married Rani Maharana four months ago. As per the allegations of Rani’s parents, he would often beat up his wife. Late on Monday night, Lakshmi called Rani’s family members to inform them that she committed suicide.
On reaching the spot, the deceased’s family members lodged a complaint at Golanthara Police Station. Acting on the complaint, Lakshmi was detained at the Medical Police Outpost.
However, Lakshmi is alleged to have escaped from the outpost. In this regard, no reaction was received from the police.
Meanwhile, a purported video of Lakshmi intimidating Rani is going viral on social media.
“They married four months ago. He (Lakshmi) often tortured her physically. In this regard, we had also lodged a complaint with Golanthara Police Station. She was beaten up two days before her death. The body had injury marks. We demand capital punishment for him,” said Rajesh Kumar Maharana, the brother of the deceased.
“I don’t know what happened between them yesterday because we live separately. I came to know about it only when he called me up to inform that Rani had committed suicide,” said Lakhmi’s mother Kumudini Maharana.
