Kathmandu: Indian Army Chief Gen V K Singh arrived here today to attend a regional seminar on natural disaster management and humanitarian assistance.

The seminar is being organised with a view to develop a common regional perspective on plan, management and implementation among the armies in the region.

Gen Singh, who is leading a three member delegation, will meet his Nepalese counterpart Chhatra Man Singh Gurung later today. Gen Singh will tomorrow address the concluding session of the seminar chaired by the Nepalese army chief.

The seminar is expected to provide a platform for SAARC nations to share their practices to deal with disaster management and humanitarian assistance. Speaking at the inaugural session, Nepal army chief Gurung said: "cooperation and collaboration among the neighbouring countries will help reduce the risks during natural disasters while learning lessons from the past experiences."

Besides representatives from the SAARC countries, high officials of US Pacific Command and Chinese military officials are also attending the three-day seminar, aimed at sharing knowledge and skills on disaster preparedness among the participating countries.

Altogether 60 delegates and observers of SAARC countries, China and the US are taking part in the regional seminar. Gen Singh will call also meet President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai during his brief stay in Kathmandu.
