Islamabad: High alert has been sounded on Monday across the Pakistani capital and security was beefed up in the diplomatic area, especially around the US embassy, following the killing of world`s most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Security has also been strengthened around the US consulates in Peshawar, Lahore and Karachi, Pakistani officials said.

Even the American school would be closed tomorrow as part of the security arrangement.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik chaired a meeting of top police, security and intelligence officials to review the security arrangements.

High alert was sounded across Islamabad following the meeting.

Official said security will be beefed up at all important buildings and authorities in four provinces have been directed to provide vigilance.

Special security measures were put in place soon after US President Barrack Obama announced killing of bin Laden.

The al-Qaeda chief was killed early on Monday by US special forces in a helicopter-borne operation at Abbottabad near the Pakistani capital, climaxing a over 10-year long massive manhunt.
