Caracas: Venezuela's Supreme Court has been attacked by grenades dropped from a helicopter in what President Nicolas Maduro called a "terrorist attack", a media report said.

Footage on social media showed a police helicopter circling over the city before shots and a loud bang were heard, the BBC reported.

The police officer said to have piloted the stolen aircraft issued a statement denouncing the "criminal government".

President Maduro has faced months of mass protests amid a political and economic crisis.

The Supreme Court was regularly criticised by the Venezuelan opposition for its rulings which bolster Maduro's hold on power.

Earlier on Tuesday, armed civilian groups attacked the Venezuelan Parliament building after a clash between lawmakers and the military police of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), Efe news quoted opposition legislator Julio Borges as saying.
