Washington: The total number of global coronavirus cases was nearing the 6 million mark, while the deaths have surged to more than 364,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Saturday morning, the overall number of cases stood at 5,923,432, while the death toll increased to 364,849, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
Currently, the US has 1,745,930 confirmed coronavirus cases and 102,808 deaths, both tallies account for the highest in the world, according to the CSSE.
Meanwhile in terms of cases, Brazil comes in the second place with 465,166 infections.
This was followed by Russia (387,623), the UK (272,607), Spain (238,564), Italy (232,248), France (186,923), Germany (182,922), India (173,491), Turkey (162,120), Iran (146,668), and Peru (141,779), the CSSE figures showed.
Regarding fatalities, the UK continues in the second position after the US with 38,243 COVID-19 deaths, which also accounts for the highest fatalities in Europe.
The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (33,229), France (28,717), Brazil (27,878) and Spain (27,121).
S. Africa reports record daily increase in COVID-19 cases
South Africa reported 1,837 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily increase since the country confirmed its first case in early March, bringing the total to 29,240, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.
"Regrettably, we report 34 more COVID-19 related deaths -- this brings the total national deaths to 611," Mkhize said in his daily update on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.
So far, the nationwide count of recoveries stood at 15,093, with a recovery rate of 52.4 per cent, he said, adding that a total of 680,175 tests have been conducted, with 24,452 tests done in the past 24 hours.

Egypt sees highest single-day hike of COVID-19 deaths
Egypt registered 34 new COVID-19 deaths, the highest single-day surge since the pandemic hit the country in mid-February, raising the death toll to 879. The North African country also reported a single-day record of 1,289 new coronavirus cases, raising the total infections in Egypt to 22,082, Egypt's health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Megahed noted that 152 coronavirus patients were completely cured and discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 5,511.
Egypt has been witnessing a continuing surge in COVID-19 infections since the last week of April, with the government urging Egyptians to stay at home to avoid infections.

Pak COVID-19 cases above 64,000, death toll at 1,317
Pakistan's coronavirus cases on Friday reached 64,028 with 2,636 new patients while the death toll climbed to 1,317 after 57 people lost their lives in the last 24 hours, even as the Special Assistant on Health said that the situation is under control.
The Ministry of National Health Services reported that 25,309 cases were diagnosed in Sindh, 22,964 in Punjab, 8,842 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 3,928 in Balochistan, 2,100 in Islamabad, 658 in Gilgit-Baltistan, and 227 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
On the positive side, the ministry said, 22,305 patients have been recovered so far from the virus. The authorities conducted 11,931 coronavirus tests during the last 24 hours, taking the number of tests done so far to 520,017.
