Colombo: India today said that the recent incidents of assault on Sri Lankan Buddhist monks in Tamil Nadu were "isolated" and all possible measures have been taken to ensure the safety and security of visitors from the island.
Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, Ashok K Kantha told separate delegations of senior Buddhist monks that "these were isolated incidents and did not reflect the strong people-to-people bonds that have been an integral part of the close historical, cultural and civilisational ties between the two countries."
The monks called on the envoy over the attacks on Sri Lankan monks in Tamil Nadu recently.
"The Government of India, in consultation with the concerned state governments, has taken and will continue to take all possible measures to ensure the safety, security and well-being of Sri Lankan visitors to India, including to Tamil Nadu," he said.
Buddhist monks came under assault by activists of some fringe pro-Tamil outifts in Tamil Nadu over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
The High Commission encountered a series of protest demonstrations this week. The protesting groups were angered by attacks against monks in Tamil Nadu and the Indian backing to the US moved resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council.
