The government has introduced a technology called Direct-to-Mobile (D2M), developed by Saankhya Labs and IIT Kanpur.
Trials for this technology will happen soon in 19 cities across India.
D2M allows users to watch videos on their phones without needing an active internet connection.
IIT Kanpur, with Prasar Bharti and Telecommunications Development Society, released a document last year explaining D2M.
The technology has various uses, including content delivery, education, and providing information during crises.
D2M is a way to get personalised, on-demand content directly on smartphones, bypassing traditional methods.
Similar to an FM radio, D2M sends signals directly to smartphones, using terrestrial infrastructure and an assigned spectrum.
The government has set aside the 470-582MHz spectrum for this technology.
D2M helps unclog 5G networks, making it faster, and allows direct streaming of content like live TV matches without internet use.
About 69% of content accessed on 80 crore smartphones in India is video. D2M aims to reach nearly 8-9 crore homes without TVs and benefit both users and telecom operators.
