Do you know that a man was 'buried' on the moon? Yes, there is a man named Dr. Eugene Shoemaker, a pioneer in planetary science, and the first and only person to be buried on the moon.
Dr. Shoemaker dedicated his life to studying asteroids, comets, and the lunar system. He was also trained Apollo astronauts on lunar rocks and craters.
Unfortunately, Dr. Eugene Shoemaker passed away in a car accident in 1997.
He harboured a lifelong wish to visit the moon, which he never achieved.
In accordance with his wishes, his family arranged for his ashes to be sent to the moon.
A capsule containing his ashes, a picture, and an inscription was sent aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft. The spacecraft gathered important data and images during its orbit around the moon.
NASA ended the mission by deliberately crashing it onto the lunar surface on July 31, 1999.
Dr. Shoemaker's burial on the moon symbolises humanity's exploration of space.
He remains the only person buried on the moon, in a crater named after him near the south pole.
