7 Cold-blooded Assassinations of Political Leaders From US' Lincoln to Japan's Shinzo Abe

1865: Abraham Lincoln was the first US President to be assassinated. He was shot dead by John Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington on account of political conspiracy.

1881: James A. Garfield, former president of the United States, was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in DC. The assassination took place within the first four months of his presidency.

1901: William McKinley was shot at after delivering a speech in New York. The presidential seat was then succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt.

1963: John F. Kennedy was shot dead during his visit to Dallas. The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was also fatally shot while on his way to county jail.

1984: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at her residence in New Delhi. The assassination was carried out by her own bodyguards, in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star.

1991: The assassination of the former PM of India Rajiv Gandhi occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Tamil Nadu. The assassin was a 22-year-old girl who blew an RDX explosive while greeting Gandhi.

2022: The former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was assassinated during a campaign in Nara, Japan. He was the longest-serving chief of cabinet in Japanese history.
