Know all about the deadly ‘Chandipura virus’ outbreak in Gujarat

Six children lost their lives due to suspected Chandipura virus infection in Gujarat.

Chandipura virus was first identified in Maharashtra in 1965 and its symptoms include high fever, severe headaches & mental disorientation.

This virus primarily affects children and it spreads by the sting of a vector-infected sandfly.

Chandipura virus, also known as Chandipura vesiculovirus (CHPV), is an RNA virus from the Rhabdoviridae family, which is also home to the rabies virus.

Chandipura virus’ transmission mechanisms are not completely clear. It involves vector-borne transmission via sandfly bites, animal reservoirs, and outbreaks associated with sandfly breeding.

Preventive measures for the Chandipura virus focuses on controlling sandfly population, using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and raising public awareness in affected communities.

Treatment for the Chandipura virus infection focuses on supportive care due to the absence of specific antiviral drugs or vaccines.

Immediate treatment includes hospitalization, particularly for children, ensuring adequate hydration, especially during severe vomiting and use of anticonvulsants to manage seizures when necessary.
