Habisha Dalma Recipe: A Traditional Odia Delight for the Holy Month of Kartika

Habisha Dalma is a special type of dalma which is made in almost every Odia household during the Holy month of Kartika.

Listed below is an easy recipe of this traditional Odia dish

Ingredients: Split Moong dal (1 cup), Taro (4-5 medium), Raw banana (2), Sweet potato (3 small), Elephant apple (1 small), Water (4-5 cups), Salt to taste, Grated ginger (1.5 inches), Grated coconut (1 cup), Ghee (1 tbsp).

Dry roast the moong dal until aromatic and rinse the dal thoroughly with water until it runs clear.

Cut the taro, raw banana, and sweet potato into large pieces.

In a deep-bottomed bowl or pressure cooker, add the vegetables, moong dal, water, and salt. Mix well and cover with a lid.

For stovetop cooking, cook until the mixture is 80% done. If using a pressure cooker, cook for 2 whistles and allow the pressure to release naturally.

While it cooks, grate and crush the ginger, and smash the elephant apple pieces.

Once the veggies and dal are tender, remove the lid and check for doneness. Add the ginger, elephant apple, grated coconut, and ghee. Stir well.

Let it simmer for another minute, then serve it hot.
