The Skygazers will see the supermoon lighting up the night sky tonight. This event features one of the largest and brightest moons of 2024- a Supermoon.
A Supermoon appears larger and brighter because it occurs when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth.
Today’s event is even more special because it is a Super Blue Moon. A Blue Moon happens only a few times every few decades.
In August, the full moon is known as the "Sturgeon Moon," so this Super Blue Moon will also be called a "Sturgeon Moon."
Sky enthusiasts and astronomy fans will have a treat tonight, as this Super Blue Moon coincides with Rakhi Purnima.
This phenomenon is due to the moon’s elliptical orbit, which causes it to vary in distance from Earth.
The Super Blue Moon is expected to reach its peak brightness at 11:56 PM IST.
For the best view, once can use a telescope or binoculars to see its unique features.
