Ahead of the 2025 Oscars, the Film Academy has announced a series of changes to the rules and promotional campaign regulations for its 97th edition, scheduled for March 2 next year
In an effort to strengthen traditional cinemas, the Academy has modified the eligibility criteria for films, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Eligibility Criteria for Films: Films must screen for at least one week in select metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas-Fort Worth, and meet expanded theatrical standards in multiple US markets and international territories.
Convergence of Animated and International Feature Categories: Animated feature films from foreign countries can now be considered for both categories, if they meet eligibility requirements.
Best Original Score Category: The category will now feature a shortlist of 20 titles instead of 15, with up to three composers eligible to receive individual statuettes for their contributions to a score.
Requirements for Writers: Writers aiming for Oscars recognition must provide a final shooting script, potentially impacting films with extensive improvisation.
Modifications to Special Awards: The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award will now be presented as an Oscar statuette, while the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award has been redefined to recognize humanitarian efforts promoting human welfare and addressing inequities.
Renaming of Scientific and Technical Awards: Two awards presented at the Scientific and Technical Awards have been renamed to better honour technological contributions.
Submission Deadlines: Key submission deadlines have been announced for various categories, emphasizing the importance of timely submissions.
Updated Campaign Promotional Regulations: Guidelines for promoting Oscar-eligible motion pictures and performances to Academy members have been outlined.
