IAS Officer Divya Mittal's Tips for Better Decision-Making

Divya Mittal, an accomplished IAS officer, brings a unique blend of experiences from being an ex-IPS officer and a banker. She is also an alumna of IITD and IIMB.

Recently, on the ‘X’ platform, Mittal shared insightful tips on decision-making, emphasising the critical role of timing in achieving success in life.

Reversibility: Mittal categorises decisions into reversible and irreversible, underlining the importance of understanding the potential impacts of choices.

Inversion Technique: Instead of focusing solely on success, she suggests identifying factors that could lead to failure and then eliminating those obstacles.

First Principles Thinking: For creative problem-solving, Mittal advises starting from the fundamentals rather than relying solely on conventional thinking.

Eisenhower Box: Mittal introduces the Eisenhower box, a decision matrix that classifies decisions into Important vs Urgent categories, offering options like 'Do it now,' 'Schedule for later,' 'Delegate/Outsource,' and 'Delete/Eliminate.'

The matrix helps in efficiently categorising decisions, enabling quick and effective actions based on their urgency and importance.

Mittal emphasises that not everyone is naturally adept at decision-making, and employing such frameworks can significantly enhance our ability to make better decisions in various aspects of life.
