Odisha shivers as cold wave intensifies, temp below 10°C in 10 places

Odisha finds itself in the throes of a deepening cold wave, with temperatures plunging far below normal and frost-laden winds sweeping across towns, villages, and hilly terrains. The sudden shift in weather has left the state shivering, as Kandhamal district, home to Odisha’s Kashmir, recorded the lowest temperatures, with the mercury falling below 5°C. 

For the first time this year, the minimum night temperature touched 4°C.

Layers of fog have taken over roads and farmlands, disrupting visibility and bringing morning activity to a near standstill. As winter tightens its icy hold, the chill is being felt in every corner of the state impacting travel, livelihoods, and daily routines on an unprecedented scale.

Kandhamal Records Season’s Lowest Temperature

At G. Udayagiri, the mercury was recorded at 4.4°C, marking one of the coldest nights of the season. The biting cold has disrupted daily life in the hilly district, with residents waking up to dense fog and chilly winds.

Ten Cities Below 10°C

Across Odisha, ten cities experienced temperatures below 10°C. Semiliguda recorded 6.1°C, Rourkela 7.2°C, Daringbadi 7.5°C, Jharsuguda 7.6°C, and Phulbani 8°C. Meanwhile, 39 towns across the state remained below 15°C. Cuttack and Bhubaneswar shivered at 12°C, adding to the widespread winter discomfort.

Weather Office Warns of Harsher Days Ahead

The weather centre has predicted that the cold wave will continue for the next few days. Dense fog and icy winds are expected to disrupt daily life further. Authorities have advised the public to avoid driving in thick fog due to low visibility.

As Odisha braces for more intense cold, residents are urged to take precautions. With temperatures dipping across the state, the winter chill is set to tighten its grip in the coming days.
