The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday reported that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure zone. Meteorologists indicated that this system is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm named ‘Montha’ by 27th October.
Taking to his X handle, IMD weather expert Umashankar Das shared, “The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure system. This is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm by Oct 27.”
Officials have warned coastal districts to remain alert as cyclonic conditions may develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
Authorities are monitoring the system closely and have advised fishermen and coastal residents to avoid venturing into the sea until the situation stabilizes.

The IMD has also urged the public to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow instructions from local administration to ensure safety. Preparations for potential evacuations and disaster management measures are being reviewed in anticipation of the storm.
Cyclone naming follows the international convention, with ‘Montha’ being suggested by Thailand, meaning fragrant fruit or beautiful flower in Thai. This will be the first significant cyclonic event affecting the region this season, and authorities are coordinating with district administrations for timely alerts and response planning.
