Depression forms in Bay of Bengal, Heavy rainfall warning for Odisha

The IMD has issued a rainfall warning for several districts of Odisha. Light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy showers at isolated locations over South Odisha on September 26.

A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression on Friday, raising the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall along the coastal regions of Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh.

The depression lay centred over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal near latitude 19.3°N and longitude 86.1°E. It was positioned about 60 km south-southeast of Puri, 130 km east of Gopalpur, 130 km south-southwest of Paradip, and 230 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Meteorologists have forecast that the system is likely to move nearly westwards and make landfall close to Gopalpur on the morning of September 27, 2025.

Extremely heavy rainfall could occur in some areas. On September 27, isolated parts of South Odisha may again witness very heavy downpours, while North Odisha districts are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on both days.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, as rough conditions are expected along the Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts.

The IMD has also cautioned that localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruption in transport and electricity supply could occur due to the heavy spells of rain. Disaster management teams have been kept on standby in coastal districts to deal with any emergency situation.

South Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few locations on September 26. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places.

September 27: Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of South Odisha.

North Odisha: Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely on September 26 and 27.
