Shubman Gill
Former South African cricket star AB de Villiers has praised the BCCI’s decision to appoint Shubman Gill as Team India's new ODI captain, calling it a forward-looking and timely move amid uncertainty over Rohit Sharma’s participation in the 2027 World Cup. The decision surprised many, given Rohit’s leadership in India’s last 50-over title win at the Champions Trophy, but selectors opted to focus on the future.
De Villiers noted that with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to international cricket after the Champions Trophy, India is preparing for three ODIs on the upcoming Australia tour. He emphasized that the uncertainty around the veterans’ availability for the next World Cup made giving Gill the captaincy a smart choice.
“It’s not certain that both Rohit and Virat will be around for the next World Cup. That may have been part of the reasoning in handing Shubman Gill the ODI captaincy. He’s young, in great form, and has strong leadership potential. At the same time, having Rohit and Virat in the dressing room provides him with invaluable guidance. It’s a fantastic setup for Shubman, especially with the upcoming tour,” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
Reflecting on the Champions Trophy, he highlighted Kohli’s brilliant century against Pakistan and a key contribution in the semi-final against Australia, while Rohit, despite a dip in form, played a decisive innings in the final against New Zealand to secure his second ICC title as captain within a year.
De Villiers also shared his thoughts on Rohit and Kohli’s prospects of playing in another World Cup, noting that form and fitness will determine their continued presence in the team. “Even legends have to earn their place until 2027. They are motivated to play another World Cup for India, but it will depend on consistent performances. The selectors’ message is clear—they need to keep scoring runs,” he explained.

He highlighted the fierce competition within the Indian team, which will push both Rohit and Kohli to maintain high standards. At the same time, their experience will be invaluable for mentoring younger players and supporting Gill’s development as captain.
“The competition in Team India is intense. Rohit and Kohli know they must perform, but having them guide the youngsters and help Shubman grow as a captain is an asset. If they remain fit and in form, I have no doubt we’ll see them at the 2027 World Cup,” De Villiers added.
With both stars stepping away from Tests and T20Is, their ODI appearances will be limited. Staying fit and maintaining form will be crucial if they aim to compete in the next ODI World Cup.
