In China, a growing trend known as "iron butt" travel is taking over among young people facing economic challenges owing to high unemployment and low income. Instead of jumping on expensive flights, these budget-conscious travellers are opting for long, uncomfortable bus and train rides across the country and beyond. The hashtag #ironbutttravel has gained millions of clicks on Chinese social media platforms especially among recent university graduates and young professionals.
One such traveller, who has journeyed through Central Asia and Europe by bus, says that the "iron butt" travel is simple & affordable. She said "It lets me visit more places for less money”.
Another traveller, recently completed a gruesome 46-hour bus ride from Xinjiang to Kazakhstan. She did end up with massive back pain but cherished the rich cultural exchanges along the way. While the "iron butt" trend may not be sustainable long-term, for now, it's a way for young people to explore the world when other options seem out of reach. Despite overcrowded seats and long hours, the rewards for a "iron butt" traveller are cultural connections and the opportunity to meet fellow travellers with similar dreams.
