At least nine people including farmers and a local journalist were killed in Uttar Pradesh after violent protests erupted during Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur on Sunday (October 4). A case has been filed against Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra for allegedly mowing down protesting farmers in his vehicle near Lakhimpur Kheri.
According to the UP ADG, Prashant Kumar, a retired High Court judge will investigate the matter. As per latest reports, the UP government has announced Rs 45 lakh compensation and a job to one of the family members of the deceased farmers, based on eligibility.
The injured will be given an aid of Rs 10 lakh. The post-mortem report of four farmers confirmed that death was due to shock, excessive bleeding and hemorrhage. Monday morning, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was arrested in Hargaon by the Uttar Pradesh police while she was on her way to meet the families of the farmers reportedly killed in the violence.
Former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav was also put under house arrest ahead of his visit to Lakhimpur Kheri where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed.
On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in a statement that he was 'saddened' by the violence in his state that left nine people, including four farmers, dead. He assured strict action against those responsible for the violence and made an appeal to the public to maintain peace.
