The rise in pollution choking Delhi, the Supreme Court has pulled up Haryana and Punjab Government over stubble or crop residue burning. The Apex Court stressed that the situation can’t be politicized and equalized the choking air quality with “murder of people’s health.” A two-judge bench headed by Justice S K Kaul put responsibility of stopping the burning on the respective station house officers under the overall supervision of the chief secretary. The judgment said and we quote, “We don’t know how you do it, it’s your job. But it must be stopped.” The order also directs Delhi Government to look after vehicular emission of pollution. It has further asked Rajasthan and other states to minimize the use of fire crackers during festive season. The top court also suggested Centre to stop supporting minimum support price on Paddy to encourage the farmers to shift to other alternatives like millets.
