A massive explosion rocked Balanga Police Station at Puri on Monday (Sept 27) night. Such was the intensity of the blast that the station got reduced to rubble within seconds.
Sources said that a huge cache of seized explosives that were kept inside the police station exploded. As per reports, official documents, electronic equipment and mobile tower were completely destroyed in the explosion.
The Sentry of the Malkhana in the police station Saroj Behera, narrowly escaped the mishap as he managed to dodge out of the premises just before the detonation.
However, other officials of the police station were all saved as they were not present at the spot during the mishap. Reports said that the other personnel of the station were deployed for poll-duty during the time of the incident.
Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh and other senior officials of the district police immediately reached the spot and initiated a probe into the circumstances that led to the blast.
Meanwhile, locals have questioned the police for keeping such huge amount of explosives at the station, that too in the middle of a densely populated area in Puri.
