Debendra Samarath - a Constable with the Excise department in Kodinga is setting an example of what it truly means to be a leader in times of distress.

Debendra is a resident of Karchamala village in Kosagumuda block of Nabarangpur district. After finishing duty as a Constable in the day, every evening, Debendra is teaching kids of different classes and also those preparing for competitive exams, for free.

While Odisha continues to grapple with shortage of teachers in government schools, Debendra is doing a tremendous job in providing assistance to the poor children and the community as a whole.

Asked about his passion, Debendra said he wants the best for these 60 odd kids, which is why he makes sure he doesn’t miss imparting knowledge and education to the students whenever he is free from official duty.

He had even qualified OTET and CT entrance but could not complete his graduation due to financial constraints and other reasons. Nonetheless, even after his appointment in excise department in 2020, his voluntary approach to help the poor kids continued and has managed to fetch applauds from senior officials and other staff of the department.

“I want to give more time to the students but I am unable to do so because of the Khaki job responsibilities. Whatever free time I am getting, I am devoting it to teaching these students. Through this initiative, I would like to give a message to the young generation who have ‘man-making’ abilities. Each of them has the ability but refrains from doing so. I would request my brothers and sisters to impart free education to children in their village, whenever possible.” says Debendra.

The constant love and appreciation Debendra is receiving from the students and their parents, has kept him going. One Sitaram Pujari of the village has given space at his home where all the classes are conducted. He is one among the many villagers who are full of gratitude to the Excise Constable.

“Debendra Babu told me one day he will once again start teaching the poor tribal kids. Even though he is engaged in a job, he assured he managed his coaching during free hours for the future of these kids. Not only that, he has also provided kids with necessary study items including books and other accessories. We would like to thank Debendra Babu from the bottom of our hearts for the services he is rendering.” said Pujari.
