Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and left the country, amid massive protests against her government that has killed more than 106 people since Sunday. Bangladesh Army has reportedly confirmed about her quitting and leaving Dhaka. Local news channel reported that Hasina was forced to quit as prime minister after massive protests against her government over a controversial quota system that reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971. The army chief is expected to address the nation shortly. The government earlier ordered a complete internet shutdown as protestors asked the general public to join a "Long March to Dhaka". However, a government agency gave a verbal order to start broadband internet around 1:15 on Monday. What had started as the demand for quota reform eventually turned into a movement to change the government.Severe clashes broke out when protesters attending a non-cooperation programme to demand the government's resignation faced opposition from government supporters. Protesters dismissed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation for dialogue to quell the violence. The agitators announced to organise a 'March to Dhaka' programme on Sunday. However, there is concern and apprehension among the public about 'March to Dhaka' programme amid the curfew. The government has imposed an indefinite curfew across Bangladesh amid the raging clashes. Mobile internet has also been tightly restricted nationwide. In light of the situation, to ensure public safety amid the violent protests, a three-day general holiday has been declared on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Recently, over 200 people were killed in violent clashes between the police and predominantly student protesters demanding scrapping of the controversial quota system that reserves 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971.Latest reports suggest that Sheikh Hasina has left her Dhaka house and is on way to Delhi. Indian security agencies are monitoring a C-130 aircraft with call sign AJAX1431 since 10 kms from Indian border with Bangladesh and it is heading towards Delhi. It is believed that Sheikh Hasina and some members of her entourage are on this plane.
