The World Health Organization advises adults to consume less than 2000 mg of sodium (or about 5 grams of salt) per day. However, doctors pointed out that a salt-restricted diet can leed to insulin resistance, raising the risk of diabetes. Additionally, it can increase total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol levels.
Sodium which is essential for brain, nerve, and muscle function, is critical for maintaining health. Low sodium intake can cause weakness, dizziness, fatigue, and, in severe cases, even seizures or death. While excessive salt can spike blood pressure in salt-sensitive individuals, experts recommend individuals to maintain a normal salt intake. Therefore, it is advised that those on salt-restricted diets to watch for symptoms of hyponatremia that is low sodium in the body.
