An influential freedom fighter. A charismatic orator. A leader possessed with exceptional leadership qualities. Subhas Chandra Bose remains significant throughout the years. While we celebrate the leader on his Jayanti, there are also some unsolved theories about his death which always echo around. Netaji had gone missing on August 18, 1945, after reportedly boarding a plane from Taihoku Airport in Taiwan which crashed leading to the rumors of his death. Here are some snippets from various reports to add more: Japanese Government Report: In 1956, this report was handed over to Indian Embassy in Tokyo but was declassified in 2016, after 60 years. According to the report, the airplane crashed and burst into flames. During the crash, Subhas Bose’s clothes caught fire and he had sustained severe burn injuries. He was admitted to hospital, and although he was conscious and able to carry on a conversation for some time he died several hours later. Figgess Report: As per a 1946 report by the British Intelligence Officer in Tokyo, Bose died in a Taihoku Military Hospital sometime in between 7PM and 8PM, local time, on 18th August 1945. The report also said that Bose was cremated in Linsen Park. Contrary to the reports, Japanese National Report states that on 18th August only one person was cremated at the Linsen Park Crematorium, namely Ichiro Okura. Government Of India’s Report: Shah Nawaz Committee in 1956, the Khosla Commission in 1970, and the Mukherjee Commission in 2005 led the investigation on Netaji’s disappearance but all in vain. However, the Indian Government later accepted the claims by Japanese Government about the death of Netaji. India also accepted that ashes of Netaji are preserved in Renkoji Temple in Tokyo. Indian Home Ministry Reply To An RTI: To a right to information application of a resident of Kolkata, BJP-led government said that Netaji Subhas Bose died in an air crash in 1945. The RTI also shed light on one Gumnami Baba in Uttar Pradesh who was believed to be Bose. However the Indian Government rejected the speculation. In 2016, on Netaji’s 119th birth anniversary on January 23, as many as 100 secret files were made public by PM Modi. However, The mysteries around Netaji’s death are still buzzing. Recently, TMC demanded declassification of all the reports available on death or disappearance of Netaji. It also demanded that the ashes preserved in Renkoji Temple be sent for DNA analysis. Meanwhile, the Taiwan government has welcomed Indian Researchers to dig deep into the extraordinary circumstances leading to disappearance of one of the most influential freedom fighters of India.
