In all probability, children could get Covid-19 vaccine jab by September this year. Speaking to news agency ANI, AIIMS Chief Dr Randeep Guleria informed that the trials of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on children are underway and the results are expected by September.
While the second dose of Covaxin has already been administered to children of 6-12 years in trials at the Delhi AIIMS, Covaxin second dose is likely to be administered to children aged 2-6 years in trials next week. According to the AIIMS Chief, vaccines for children should be available in the coming weeks or by September.
Following the vaccination drive of children, schools can be reopened in a graded manner, Dr Gularia said. Guleria said that this vaccination drive ahead of reopening of schools will provide protection to children and give confidence to the public that children are safe.
As per reports, the vaccine trials are being conducted in three phases by segregating children into various categories based on their age. Meanwhile, Zydus Cadilla has applied to the DCGI for emergency use authorisation of vaccine ZyCov-D, claiming that they have included data for children for the vaccine, the AIIMS chief said.
