An iron scrap trader was arrested in Bhubaneswar on Monday on charges of Rs. 10 crore GST fraud. The GST authorities raided the house of the accused indentified as Smruti Ranjan Sahoo. Some fake documents were seized from the residence of the accused during the raid. Smruti Ranjan Sahoo, who was unable to produce any valid documents, was arrested from Bhubaneswar’s Bapuji Nagar area today. The accused was allegedly involved in operating at least 7 different fake firms over the years. Smruti Ranjan Sahoo had allegedly created several fake profiles of persons as owners of these firms to defraud crores of rupees by filing GST taxes in their names. As per reports, the accused was involved in filing GST in the names of auto rickshaw drivers, students, and others over the years. The GST officials highlighted that the annual return of the accused was over Rs. 40 crore. There have reportedly been several such GST fraud cases that surfaced recently from Rourkela as well. Reports suggest that the accused used to conduct his businesses in the steel city as well.
