The tribal-dominated Bonda Ghati in Malkangiri that was relatively untouched by the Covid-19 virus in the first wave has seen a surge in cases during the second wave. To prevent the spread of the virus in these far flung areas of the state, the district administration has launched a slew of measures. The district authorities stated that a team comprising of Khairaput BDO and other administrative officials has begun a mass awareness programme in the tribal pocket. Emphasis is being laid on the use of masks and social distancing. The officials are also making people learn how to maintain hand hygiene to prevent infection. Similarly, free-of-cost masks were also distributed to people. Additionally, prompt isolation in case of suspected cases and other appropriate Covid protocols are also being followed. Earlier, as many as 12 persons were diagnosed with Covid-19, which includes eight cases from Mudulipada and four from Andrabahal Panchayat. However, the lack of awareness among the tribe and their reluctance to undergo testing is also posing a challenge for the administration.
