In a gruesome incident, a 34-year-old woman was raped and tortured with an iron rod inside a tempo parked on roadside in Sakinaka area of Mumbai. After a 33-hour-long battle in the hospital, the woman succumbed on Saturday morning.

Within a few hours of the incident, police managed to arrest one accused identified as Mohan Chouhan (45).

Preliminary probe suggests that the woman was raped and brutally assaulted with an iron rod in her private parts. As per reports, upon receiving a call in the early hours of Friday that a man was thrashing a woman on Khairani Road, a police team rushed to the spot only to find the woman lying in a pool of blood. The woman was rushed to the hospital, but she died during treatment.

The incident is a grim reminder of the 2012 Delhi gangrape case. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray termed the incident as a "blot on humanity", and promised a fast-track trial in the case. The CM asserted that the perpetrator would be punished severely.

The Opposition BJP in Maharashtra has sought capital punishment for the accused.
